Legal Requirements for Indonesian Citizens

To get married in Indonesia, Indonesian citizens must meet specific legal requirements. The first requirement is that both parties must be of legal age, which is 19 years old for males and 16 years old for females. Both parties must also be unmarried, divorced, or widowed.

The following requirement is that both parties obtain a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) from the local civil registry office (Dinas Kependudukan dan Catatan Sipil), where they reside. The CNI certifies that there are no legal impediments to the marriage and is valid for six months.

After obtaining the CNI, both parties must appear before a religious leader or the local civil registry office to register for marriage. The couple must also provide two witnesses who are at least 18 years old and can vouch for the identity of the bride and groom.

Legal Requirements for Foreigners

Foreigners who wish to marry in Indonesia must also meet specific legal requirements. They must provide a Certificate of No Impediment from their respective embassy or consulate in Indonesia, stating that they are free to marry. Sworn Translator must translate it into Indonesian.

Foreigners must also obtain a Stay Permit (ITAS) or a Temporary Stay Permit (ITK) from the local immigration office where they reside. The permit is valid for six months and can be extended if necessary.

After obtaining the necessary documents, foreigners must appear before a religious leader or the local civil registry office to register for marriage. The couple must also provide two witnesses who are at least 18 years old and can vouch for the identity of the bride and groom.

Both parties must have a valid passport and an Indonesian Tax Identification Number (NPWP) to get married in Indonesia. In addition, if you are not a Muslim, you must obtain a letter of no impediment to marriage from your embassy or consulate in Indonesia. If you are a Muslim, you must provide a conversion certificate to show that you have converted to Islam.

The Indonesian government now offers an online marriage registration service, which can be used by both Indonesians and foreigners. This service is available through the Ministry of Religious Affairs website and allows couples to register their marriage without visiting a government office.
